Assembly Natural Resources Committee passed SB 188, a bill co-authored by Asemblymember Al Muratsuchi and meant to stop oil drilling off the coast

Bill in response to President Trump’s recent Executive Order authorizing it

Torrance, CA –The Assembly Natural Resources Committee passed SB 188, a bill authored by Senator Hannah Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) and co-authored by Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, Senate pro Tempore Kevin De Leon (D-Los Angeles) and Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens), that would prohibit the State Lands Commission from approving any leases authorizing the new exploration or development of oil and gas drilling off the California coast. It would also prohibit the renewal of leases that would engage in any new exploration or development of oil or gas drilling.

Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s Assembly Bill (AB) 651, which will improve protections for the sale of non-profit health care facilities, passed the Senate Health Committee

Torrance, CA –The Senate Health Committee passed Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s (D-Torrance) Assembly Bill (AB) 651, the Culturally Competent Health Care Facilities Bill.  The bill strengthens the state Attorney General’s oversight authority to preserve and promote culturally sensitive and language-appropriate health care for the state’s increasingly diverse seniors. 

“Many seniors in the South Bay and throughout the state are deeply concerned about culturally sensitive and language-appropriate health care services,” said Muratsuchi. “We need to strengthen the Attorney General’s public interest oversight authority so that we can preserve and promote culturally sensitive health care when a nonprofit provider is sold to a for-profit buyer.”

Torrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) presented this month’s Taste of Assembly District 66, Environmental Stewardship and Small Business of the Month Awards to two South Bay businesses and a local organization this month.  The awardees are The Kettle restaurant, Surfrider Foundation South Bay Chapter and Pages Bookstore.

Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s bill to streamline construction of Beach Cities Health District’s new assisted living facility for seniors passes key Senate committee.

Streamlined construction method will save tax payers up to $20 million, and bring well-paying, middle class jobs to the community

Torrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s (D-Torrance) Assembly Bill (AB) 994 unanimously passed the Senate Governance and Finance Committee today.  The bill will allow a much-needed upgrade of the Beach Cities Health District’s (BCHD) campus to be built using a streamlined design-build construction method that will cut costs of construction by as much as 20 percent.  The upgrades include much needed maintenance on the original hospital facility, and construction of an assisted living center for the expanding senior population in the South Bay.

Torrance, CA – Yesterday, in a bipartisan vote, the California State Assembly adopted Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s (D-Torrance) HR 47, which officially recognizes June 17, 2017 as International Surfing Day in the State of California, and commends all those who work diligently to protect our state’s beaches and ocean environments.

Assemblymember Muratsuchi's bill to protect child sexual assault victims from repeated court proceedings passes Senate Public Safety Committee

Sacramento, CA – This week, the California Senate Public Safety Committee passed Assembly Bill (AB) 368, a measure meant to protect young child sexual assault victims from reliving their assault details multiple times in court.  With this bill, when an offender commits certain sexual crimes with a minor in multiple jurisdictions, the offenses may be joined and heard in any one of those locations.  The bill expands the ages of the victims from just 10-14 years old under current law to all children under the age of 14.
