Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s bill to streamline construction of Beach City Health Care District’s new assisted living facility for seniors passes State Assembly

Streamlined construction method will save tax payers up to $20 million, and bring well-paying, middle class jobs to the community

Torrance, CA – In a 73-2 vote, Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s (D-Torrance) Assembly Bill (AB) 994 passed the Assembly Floor with a vote of 73-2. The bill will allow a much-needed upgrade of the Beach Cities Health District’s (BCHD) campus to be built using a streamlined design-build construction method that will cut costs of construction by as much as 20 percent.  The upgrades include much needed maintenance on the original hospital facility, and construction of an assisted living center for the expanding senior population in the South Bay.

Torrance, CA – On Tuesday, Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s (D-Torrance) Assembly Bill (AB) 1647 passed the Assembly Floor on a bipartisan vote. The bill will require refineries to install and maintain air quality monitors at the refinery fence line and in the community.  It will also require that the governing air quality agency publicly report the readings from the monitors in real-time.

Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s Assembly Bill (AB) 461, which will exclude forgiven student debt from tax liability, approved by Assembly.

Torrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s (D-Torrance) Assembly Bill (AB) 461, which will expand the existing exclusion for forgiven or canceled debt from gross income in determining tax liability, was approved by the Assembly on a 76-0 vote on Wednesday, May 31st.  Current law allows for forgiving or canceling student loan debt, but the forgiven loan debt may still be assessed as a tax liability.

Sacramento, CA –Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) today called for $3 million in grants to the State Library for educational activities and materials on civil liberties and the World War II Japanese American Incarceration. The Assemblymember made his remarks at a Capitol press conference, where he stood with Assemblymembers and leaders from the Muslim, Asian Pacific Islander (API), Jewish and Latino communities in solidarity to ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself in the Trump era.

Torrance, CA - “The U.S. Chemical Safety Board’s (CSB) findings about the 2015 explosion at the Torrance Refinery are both troubling and serious. According to the report, the refinery failed to put into place adequate safety procedures, update its equipment and train workers adequately. But the agency, unfortunately, cannot enforce their recommendations.
