Memorial Day ceremonies in Redondo Beach summon memories of loved ones

For many of those who attended Memorial Day ceremonies in Redondo Beach on Monday, the day was deeply personal.

For Navy veteran William Woodall, gathering with fellow service members under a bright blue sky, this Memorial Day brought up memories of his brother Don Woodall who served in the Philippines as a medic during World War II and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Two bills blocking new offshore drilling pass through Appropriations Committees

Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi's Assembly Bill 1775 and Senator Hannah Beth Jackson’s Senate Bill 834, bills to protect the California coast from new federal offshore drilling leases, passed out of their respective Appropriations Committees today after being referred to the suspense file in April.

The Assembly and Senate committees both held hearings today on bills that were referred to the suspense file. The two bills will now be eligible for floor votes in the Assembly and Senate next week. 

California Police Chiefs Association awards Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi Legislator of the Year award

Torrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi is proud to announce that the California Police Chiefs Association has chosen him as their 2017 Legislator of the Year.  The award is given to the state legislator who best supported public safety issues and also worked collaboratively with the state’s police chiefs.

“I am honored to receive the California Police Chiefs Association 2017 Legislator of the Year award.  As a former prosecutor, I am proud of my 100 percent public safety voting record.  Public safety is, and always will be, a top priority for me,” said Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance).

KNX Radio: Muratsuchi Panic Button Legislation Moving Forward

(Los Angeles) - Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s (D-Torrance) legislation to protect hotel employees from sexual assaults and harassment is moving through the legislative process. Assembly Bill 1761 would require hotel employers to provide a panic button to their employees in order to summon assistance in an emergency situation. Surfers line up for inaugural Redondo Beach Police surf contest

Planning for The Line Up, a surf contest sponsored by the Redondo Beach Police Department at Avenue I on Saturday, began last October during the inaugural King of the Harbor Skateboard Championships, which was also sponsored by the Redondo Police.

“As soon as the skate contest ended, it just clicked in my brain,” Kauffman said as he suited up for Saturday’s surf contest.

Three surfing legends inducted into Hermosa’s walk of fame

Three surfing pioneers traded in their wetsuits for conventional streetwear as they were inducted into the Surfer’s Walk of Fame early Saturday afternoon at the Hermosa Beach Pier.

South Bay legend Kip Jerger, surf champion Scott Daley and female legend and California Golden Girl Candice “Candy” Woodward received a plaque on the city’s pier, joining a prestigious list of local surfers in a ceremony that began in 2003.

Lawmakers question Gov. Brown’s plan to overhaul funding for California’s community colleges

Key California lawmakers who shape education policy are questioning Gov. Jerry Brown’s plan to dramatically overhaul how community colleges are funded. The proposal calls for tying some money to student outcomes, moving away from a model that funds colleges largely based on how many students they enroll.

Some lawmakers are saying it is rushed and lacks enough buy-in from college presidents and faculty. Others worry the plan may result in financial harm to colleges and their students.

Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi delivers $231 million for the Metro Green Line extension to Torrance

Torrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) delivered $231 million dollars in state funding for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (LA Metro) extension of the Green Line light rail corridor to Torrance.  Assemblymember Muratsuchi has been negotiating with Governor Jerry Brown and LA Metro for the expedited construction of the LA Metro Green Line extension.  Today’s announcement of major state funding for the Green Line extension will help ensure that the South Bay will be served by Metro light rail service before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, as part of LA Metro’s “28 by ’28” project list.  The Green Line extension project will extend light rail service from the existing Redondo Beach Station on Marine Avenue to a proposed Torrance transit center at Crenshaw Boulevard and Del Amo Boulevard.
