Governor Signs Bill That Will Save Thousands Of Kittens And Puppies Across California

AB 2791 allows stray kittens and puppies to be immediately released to rescue groups

Torrance – Governor Jerry Brown has signed Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s (D-Torrance) Assembly Bill (AB) 2791 into law.  This law, which is sponsored by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), will allow stray, motherless kittens and puppies less than eight weeks of age to be immediately released from the shelter to rescue groups rather than be required to stay at the shelter for three days, as is required by current law.  The immediate release of these animals is meant to ensure their health and survival, as unweaned kittens and puppies are more vulnerable to disease at the shelter and are at high-risk for euthanasia.

Torrance, CA – Today, Governor Jerry Brown signed Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) and Joint Author Assembly Majority Leader Ian Calderon (D-Whittier)’s Assembly Bill 1782, a bill which establishes surfing as California’s state sport.  Surfing is an iconic part of California’s culture, and with around 1,100 miles of coastline throughout California, the sport generates significant economic activity each year for the state.

Both Assemblymembers are avid surfers who have spent much time surfing in the waters off the coast of Southern California.

Let it be known that on Aug. 20, 2018, surfing became California’s official state sport.

Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Monday that enshrines surfing in the state’s code. The bill notes that surfing quickly became a California icon after being imported from Hawaii. Malibu, Trestles, Mavericks, Rincon, Steamer Lane and Huntington are California’s world-famous surf breaks. The Surfers’ Hall of Fame is in Huntington Beach. And the neoprene wetsuit, surfers’ unofficial uniform, was invented in the Bay Area.

Dozens of animal lovers joined Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-South Bay) on Saturday to learn about the importance of adopting a pet and legislative issues regarding animal protection during the South Bay Pet Adoption Fair at Charles H. Wilson Park.

Hosted by the Carson Animal Shelter and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the fair gave attendees the opportunity to interact with several of the cats and dogs available for adoption.

Surfing Will (Probably) Be California's New Official State Sport

Alaska has dog-mushing, Minnesota has hockey and Maryland has jousting. And now California is poised to have surfing as its official state sport.

Returning after a month-long break, the state Assembly passed a measure on Monday that would list surfing as the state sport.
