(Los Angeles) - Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s (D-Torrance) legislation to protect hotel employees from sexual assaults and harassment is moving through the legislative process. Assembly Bill 1761 would require hotel employers to provide a panic button to their employees in order to summon assistance in an emergency situation. Torrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) delivered $231 million dollars in state funding for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (LA Metro) extension of the Green Line light rail corridor to Torrance.  Assemblymember Muratsuchi has been negotiating with Governor Jerry Brown and LA Metro for the expedited construction of the LA Metro Green Line extension.  Today’s announcement of major state funding for the Green Line extension will help ensure that the South Bay will be served by Metro light rail service before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, as part of LA Metro’s “28 by ’28” project list.  The Green Line extension project will extend light rail service from the existing Redondo Beach Station on Marine Avenue to a proposed Torrance transit center at Crenshaw Boulevard and Del Amo Boulevard.

Torrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) is proud to announce that he secured $10 million in additional funding over four years for the Southern California Regional Occupational Center (SoCal ROC), an award-winning career technical education program in Torrance.  The Assemblymember had requested that education funds be directed to SoCal ROC through the state’s budget.  The California Department of Finance certified that SoCal ROC’s financial plan for the next four years was stable and will be issuing the funds. 

“As a former Torrance School Board member and trustee of the SoCal ROC board, I am pleased to deliver the additional $10 million in funding for SoCal ROC.  This additional funding will ensure that this excellent program will continue to provide high-quality career technical education and teach valuable job skills to students throughout the South Bay,” said Assemblymember Muratsuchi.

Torrance, CA – Today, Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance)’s Assembly Bill 1775 passed the Assembly Natural Resources committee on a vote of 7-3.  The bill, introduced in response to the Trump Administration’s announcement of their intention to expand offshore oil and gas drilling in federal waters, will ensure that pipelines and other infrastructure cannot be built in California waters to support any new federal oil development.

“We need to protect our beautiful coast of the South Bay and throughout California. This bill would help protect the health of the residents who live and work near the coast as well as the marine environment.  It will also prevent any future oil spills,” said Assemblymember Muratsuchi.

“Enough is enough.  One month since the latest mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, I stand in solidarity with students across the country in calling on Congress to pass common sense gun safety laws like an assault weapon ban and universal background checks.

While California already has among the strongest gun safety laws in the country, we still have much work to do.  I am working with Assemblymember Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) to reintroduce a bill (AB 1014) to allow school employees, coworkers, supervisors and others to petition for gun violence restraining orders. This would allow the courts take away guns from the mentally ill and others who should not possess such dangerous weapons.”

Torrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) is proud to announce Manhattan Beach Mayor Amy Howorth as the Woman of the Year for Assembly District 66.  Serving her second term as Manhattan Beach City Councilmember, Mayor Howorth has been a South Bay resident for 21 years.  Prior to serving on the Manhattan Beach City Council, she served two terms on the Manhattan Beach school board.

“Mayor Howorth is a fixture in the South Bay community.  She has served the community for many years and made a positive impact on the people who live here.  I am proud to present this much-deserved award to her,” said Assemblymember Muratsuchi.

Torrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) and Joint Author Assembly Majority Leader Ian Calderon (D-Whittier), today held a press conference at the Tim Kelly Surfing Memorial statue in Hermosa Beach for AB 1782, a bill which will establish surfing as California’s state sport.  Both Assemblymembers, joined by other speakers and attendees, ended the event by going surfing. 

California is an iconic California sport that brings in significant economic activity to the state each year. The state is home to several surfing museums, including the Surfers’ Hall of Fame.
