Torrance, CA – Today, Governor Jerry Brown signed Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) and Joint Author Assembly Majority Leader Ian Calderon (D-Whittier)’s Assembly Bill 1782, a bill which establishes surfing as California’s state sport.  Surfing is an iconic part of California’s culture, and with around 1,100 miles of coastline throughout California, the sport generates significant economic activity each year for the state.

Both Assemblymembers are avid surfers who have spent much time surfing in the waters off the coast of Southern California.

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) has chosen Smog City Brewing Co. as his 2018 Small Business of the Year.

Torrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance)’s Assembly Bill 1775, jointly authored by Assemblymember Monique Limón (D-Santa Barbara), passed the Assembly Floor on a bipartisan vote of 45-24.  The bill, introduced in response to the Trump Administration’s announcement of their intention to expand offshore oil and gas drilling in federal waters, will ensure that pipelines and other infrastructure cannot be built in California waters to support any new federal oil development. 

“We need to protect our beautiful South Bay coast and as well as coasts throughout California. This bill will help protect the health of the residents who live and work near the coast as well as the marine environment,” said Assemblymember Muratsuchi.

(San Francisco) –Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) and joint author Assemblymember Bill Quirk wrote the “panic button” bill (Assembly Bill 1761) so hotels would be required to provide employees working alone in a guest room with a “panic button.” Assemblymember Muratsuchi said the legislation’s intent is simple, “Hotel employees deserve to feel safe when they are doing their job.”

Torrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi is proud to announce that the California Police Chiefs Association has chosen him as their 2017 Legislator of the Year.  The award is given to the state legislator who best supported public safety issues and also worked collaboratively with the state’s police chiefs.

“I am honored to receive the California Police Chiefs Association 2017 Legislator of the Year award.  As a former prosecutor, I am proud of my 100 percent public safety voting record.  Public safety is, and always will be, a top priority for me,” said Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance).

(Los Angeles) - Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi’s (D-Torrance) legislation to protect hotel employees from sexual assaults and harassment is moving through the legislative process. Assembly Bill 1761 would require hotel employers to provide a panic button to their employees in order to summon assistance in an emergency situation. Torrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) delivered $231 million dollars in state funding for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (LA Metro) extension of the Green Line light rail corridor to Torrance.  Assemblymember Muratsuchi has been negotiating with Governor Jerry Brown and LA Metro for the expedited construction of the LA Metro Green Line extension.  Today’s announcement of major state funding for the Green Line extension will help ensure that the South Bay will be served by Metro light rail service before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, as part of LA Metro’s “28 by ’28” project list.  The Green Line extension project will extend light rail service from the existing Redondo Beach Station on Marine Avenue to a proposed Torrance transit center at Crenshaw Boulevard and Del Amo Boulevard.

Torrance, CA – Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) is proud to announce that he secured $10 million in additional funding over four years for the Southern California Regional Occupational Center (SoCal ROC), an award-winning career technical education program in Torrance.  The Assemblymember had requested that education funds be directed to SoCal ROC through the state’s budget.  The California Department of Finance certified that SoCal ROC’s financial plan for the next four years was stable and will be issuing the funds. 

“As a former Torrance School Board member and trustee of the SoCal ROC board, I am pleased to deliver the additional $10 million in funding for SoCal ROC.  This additional funding will ensure that this excellent program will continue to provide high-quality career technical education and teach valuable job skills to students throughout the South Bay,” said Assemblymember Muratsuchi.
