Hosted my Lomita Community Town Hall on Saturday. We discussed many issues, including Lomita water infrastructure, housing, homelessness, education and public safety.
Many thanks to Councilmembers Cindy Segawa, William Uphoff and James Gazeley, and City Manager Ryan Smoot, who were all in attendance.
I spoke this morning to the Coalition for Adequate School Housing (C.A.S.H.), a public/private non-profit organization that advocates for K-12 school facilities funding, about my school bond bill, AB 247.
AB 247, which will be taken up in next year's session, will place the Kindergarten through Community College Public Education Facilities Bond Act on the 2024 statewide election ballot.
If approved by voters, it will provide over $10 billion in state matching funds for K-12 and California Community College Districts throughout the state. The funds will go for new school construction as well as modernization.
Thank you, CASH, for the invitation to speak to your members about my AB 247.
Along with Senator Ben Allen, I spoke to the senior class at Redondo Union High School for their first "Capitol Comes to Redondo" event. I talked about the importance of civic engagement. I also spoke about how I became an Assemblymember for the South Bay and why I chose a career in public service.
Thank you to Redondo Union High School for the invitation!
I attended a South Bay candlelight vigil tonight at the Manhattan Beach Pier to demonstrate solidarity with the people of Israel and their war against Hamas terrorists.
The Pier was lit up blue and white to support Israel. Thanks to the Jewish Community Center of the South Bay for hosting the event and to Manhattan Beach City Councilmember Amy Thomas Howorth for inviting me. Former Torrance Mayor Pat Furey and Temple Emet Rabbi Didi Thomas also attended.
I visited El Segundo High School with Superintendent Dr. Melissa Moore, School Board Member Tracey Miller-Zarneke, Principal Steve Gebhart, and Assistant Principals Alyssa Reyes and Julia Straszewski.
They discussed their 4 career pathway programs of engineering, biomedical, business, and visual and performing arts.
Thanks to all at El Segundo High School for a great visit!
Rancho Palos Verdes city officials gave me and State Senator Ben Allen a briefing and tour of the local State of Emergency area declared for the Seaview, Portugese Bend, and Abalone Cove neighborhoods.
Homes, roads and pipelines are being damaged by land movement accelerated by heavy winter rains in an area with significant bentonite clay deposits. The city is working on a $33 million surface and underground water drainage project to slow down the land movement. Thank you RPV Councilmembers David Bradley and John Cruikshank and City Manager Ara Mihranian for the briefing.
I toured Palos Verdes Peninsula High School last week with Superintendent Devin Serrano, Assistant Superintendent Brenna Terrones, City Manager Greg Grammer, City Councilmember Debby Stegura, and Principal Dr. Brent Kuykendall. We discussed the critical role of School Resource Officer Dave Rozas, school safety, and the importance of a quality education for the students on the Peninsula.
I stand in solidarity with the people of Israel and condemn the Hamas terrorists. Five years ago, I participated in a legislative delegation that visited the Gaza Strip border. The constant threat of war was symbolized by this bomb shelter covered with children's art next to a playground at Nahal Oz near Gaza.
I held a Gardena Community Town Hall this weekend. We discussed housing, noises from fireworks and the need for further public transportation access.
Thanks to Mayor Tasha Cerda, City Councilmember Mark Henderson, City Councilmember Paulette Francis, City Manager Clint Osorio and Police Chief Mike Saffell for your support and participation.
