For the past four decades, Japanese American communities across the United States have sponsored Day of Remembrance Programs in February of each year to remember what happened in 1942. Standing together, we can pass on the message of never letting this happen again.
The Assembly Labor Committee held an informational hearing today to review legislation passed in the wake of the Chevron plant fire in Richmond in 2013, which was designed to address refinery safety issues for workers and communities. Like the Richmond area, the South Bay is home to several refineries that have at times put the neighboring communities at risk—including an explosion at a refinery in Torrance that continues to cause trepidation in the community. Assemblymember Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) testified before the committee, highlighting the importance of highly skilled workers at the refinery in Torrance.
I presented Assembly Concurrent Resolution 10, which proclaims January 30 as Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution. Fred T. Korematsu was an Asian American national civil rights hero whose legacy continues inspire in people the importance of speaking up to fight injustice.
