Beautiful day for unveiling of Gabrielino Tongva monument at Abalone Cove in Rancho Palos Verdes today. The Tongva people were the first to settle on this land, which included all of the South Bay.
What does it take to transform a failing inner city public school?
I had the opportunity to learn from Green Dot Public Charter Schools founder Steve Barr and Locke High School principal Dr Peggy Gutierrez today.
14 years ago, Locke High in South Central LA was struggling with gangs, drug dealers, and failing students. A group of Locke teachers voted to turn Locke into a charter school.
Today, Locke is safer and have come a long way academically. But they still struggle with the socioeconomic challenges of a student body that is 97 percent low income, 76 percent Latino, and 24 percent Black.
As a former Torrance School Board member and parent, I was inspired by the dedicated educators of Locke High who are working to change lives through education.
Spoke and marched at the 2021 Women's March in Redondo Beach. This year's focus was on abortion rights in the wake of the very restrictive Texas abortion law that was recently passed. Proud to have participated in the signing ceremony of Senate Bill 796 by California Governor Gavin Newsom in Manhattan Beach today. This bill, which is now California law, returns two parcels of oceanfront land to its rightful owners, the descendants of the late Charles and Willa Bruce.
The land was originally the home to Bruce’s Beach Lodge, a beach resort in the early 20th century for Africans-Americans who, at the time, had limited access to beaches.
