Assembly Bill (AB) 491, which establishes $3 million in grants to the State Library for the education of Japanese American incarceration, last week passed the Assembly Education Committee on a unanimous vote of 7-0.
Specifically, the bill will extend funding for the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program, run by the State Library, through an appropriation of $3 million in general funds that will be distributed over the next three years.

Local activists have pleaded for a ban on highly toxic hydrofluoric acid used at refineries in Torrance and Wilmington — the only two in the state to use the acid. More than 8,000 people have signed a petition in support.

Torrance firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire Saturday morning at the Torrance Refining Co. complex.
Three dozen firefighters were dispatched to the refinery about 6 a.m. after getting reports of an explosion. They extinguished the blaze within a half hour, said Torrance Fire Capt. Robert Millea. Surveying the crowd at Leadership Hermosa’s annual emerging leader awards ceremony, Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) noted that the nominees represented much “of what makes Hermosa Beach so special.” Muratsuchi pointed out faces in the crowd, and mentioned following the quest of nominee Morgan Sliff to surf for 366 days in a year (and counting).
