Assembly Bill (AB) 491, Which Establishes $3M In Grants For Education on Japanese American Incarceration, Passes Assembly Education Committee Unanimously

Torrance, CA – Assembly Bill (AB) 491, which establishes $3 million in grants to the State Library for the education of Japanese American incarceration, today passed the Assembly Education Committee on a unanimous vote of 7-0.  Specifically, the bill will extend funding for the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program, run by the State Library, through an appropriation of $3 million in General Funds that will be distributed over the next three years.

Sacramento, CA – Today, the California Assembly Committee on Public Safety unanimously passed Assembly Bill (AB) 368, a measure meant to protect young child sexual assault victims from reliving their assault details multiple times in court.  With this bill, when an offender commits certain sexual crimes with a minor in multiple jurisdictions, the offenses may be joined and heard in any one of those locations.  The bill expands the ages of the victims from just 10-14years old under current law to all children under the age of 14.

With each passing Torrance refinery blast, fire, hydrofluoric acid leak, crane collapse, power outage or smoke-belching emergency flare, calls have grown for measures to make the plant safer.

Local activists have pleaded for a ban on highly toxic hydrofluoric acid used at refineries in Torrance and Wilmington — the only two in the state to use the acid. More than 8,000 people have signed a petition in support.

The crowd gathered at 10 a.m. at Columbia Park on 190th Street, cheering the remarks of Lieu, Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi and other speakers, before marching the short distance to the refinery. Passing motorists supplied supportive honks.

Fire extinguished, investigation begins at troubled Torrance refinery

Torrance firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire Saturday morning at the Torrance Refining Co. complex.

Three dozen firefighters were dispatched to the refinery about 6 a.m. after getting reports of an explosion. They extinguished the blaze within a half hour, said Torrance Fire Capt. Muratsuchi Announces A Plan for Jobs and Safety

Torrance - Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) today announced the introduction of a package of bills and budget requests to increase safety at the refinery in Torrance. Two years ago, an explosion at the Torrance refinery injured four workers and damaged equipment, forcing a shutdown of the refinery and raising the concerns of residents living in the surrounding area.  Last fall, Muratsuchi worked with community stakeholders to develop a six-point plan to improve safety at the Torrance refinery.
