Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi's Statement on California Governor Gavin Newsom's Proclamation of a State of Emergency in the City of Rancho Palos Verdes

For immediate release:

Torrance, CA– Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi's statement on Governor Gavin Newsom's proclamation of a state of emergency in the City of Rancho Palos Verdes:

"As the State Assemblymember for the City of Rancho Palos Verdes, I welcome Governor Newsom's declaration of a State of Emergency in the city due to the accelerating landslide and its devastating impact on residents. I have met with residents and witnessed the damage numerous times this past year. I have been working with city, county, state, and federal officials to address this land movement that was first detected in 1956 but dramatically accelerated following the last two winter rainstorms in 2023 and 2024.

The current situation is dire, with residents losing their homes and, more recently, their gas and electricity. I invite the Governor to meet with the residents and to witness this catastrophe personally."

Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi represents California's 66th Assembly District, which includes El Segundo, Gardena, Hermosa Beach, Lomita, Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, San Pedro and Torrance. Muratsuchi is Chair of the Assembly Education Committee, Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Aerospace, and a member of the Committees on Budget, Budget Subcommittee on Education, Higher Education, Natural Resources, and the Joint Legislative Committee on Climate Change Policies.
