Japanese American Incarceration - Day of Remembrance Ceremony - California State Museum
For the past four decades, Japanese American communities across the United States have sponsored Day of Remembrance Programs in February of each year to remember what happened in 1942. Standing together, we can pass on the message of never letting this happen again.
Testifying on the importance of highly skilled refinery workers
The Assembly Labor Committee held an informational hearing today to review legislation passed in the wake of the Chevron plant fire in Richmond in 2013, which was designed to address refinery safety issues for workers and communities. Like the Richmond area, the South Bay is home to several refineries that have at times put the neighboring communities at risk—including an explosion at a refinery in Torrance that continues to cause trepidation in the community. Assemblymember Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) testified before the committee, highlighting the importance of highly skilled workers at the refinery in Torrance.
Fred Korematsu Day - State Capitol, Assembly Floor
I presented Assembly Concurrent Resolution 10, which proclaims January 30 as Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution. Fred T. Korematsu was an Asian American national civil rights hero whose legacy continues inspire in people the importance of speaking up to fight injustice.

Virtual Press Conference to Announce AB 34
"Today, I, along with Assemblymembers Miguel Santiago and Eduardo Garcia, hosted a virtual press conference to announce my AB 34, the California Broadband for All Bond Act of 2022, a $10 billion general obligation bond measure to help close the digital divide throughout California.
Speakers in support of AB 34 included State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, California School Board Association President-elect Dr. Susan Heredia, and California State Association of Counties representative and Monterey County Supervisor Luis Alejo.Assembly Bill (AB) 34 will invest in broadband infrastructure throughout California and increase access to high-speed internet, prioritizing unserved and disadvantaged communities to help close the digital divide. The bill will help jumpstart the state’s economic recovery and support public education, telecommuting, telehealth and telemedicine, emergency response and preparedness, and other vital services. AB 34 will be heard and voted on in the Assembly Committee on Communications and Conveyance, chaired by AB 34 joint author

California needs to go big and bold to close the digital divide and jumpstart the economic recovery. This pandemic has highlighted enormous disparities in access to affordable, reliable, high-speed internet, especially in rural and low-income urban communities. As the ‘Innovation State’, California should lead by significantly increasing its investment in public broadband infrastructure -- the Infrastructure of the 21st Century -- to provide affordable and reliable access to the internet for all Californians."
Torrance Courthouse Visit
I visited Torrance Courthouse this week and met with LA Superior Court judges to learn about impact of criminal justice reform initiatives, including bail reform.
A new court policy gives judges the power to make risk assessments of those arrested for lower level crimes to determine whether to release them while their cases are pending. More serious and violent crimes are still subject to the traditional bail system.
As a former prosecutor, my top priority is public safety. While the court’s initial data looks promising, I will be monitoring how this new policy impacts public safety.

Veteran's Day in Hermosa Beach
On this Veteran's Day in Hermosa Beach, honoring all who have served our country in the United States Armed Forces.
30th Anniversary of the Veterans Memorial in Hermosa Beach. Marine Corps Major Ashley Christman was the keynote speaker and shared that "veterans share a timeless culture of adaptation and innovation that keeps all ready for the next fight along with empathy and compassion for each other's challenges and hardships that regardless of age or era allows veterans to connect to one another."
