My first Community Coffee of the month took place at Torrance Municipal Airport’s Zamperini Field Community Room on September 8th. It was a packed house and we had great conversations about fracking, traffic, the Metro Green Line extension, housing, and other community concerns. I always enjoy engaging constituents at these coffees and was encouraged by everyone’s desire to participate in the issues that affect their daily lives.
I delivered $10 million in state funding for a South Bay Public Safety Training Center this year. This funding will help provide the South Bay with a much needed public safety training center for our firefighters, law enforcement, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians. Thank you El Camino College President Dr. Dena Maloney, Torrance Fire Chief Martin Serna and the Public Safety Training Center Advisory Council for the recognition.
Kicked off National Drive Electric Week on September 6 with Plug In America! I spoke in support of the EV movement, my Assembly Bill 1796, which will help install more electric vehicle charging stations on rental properties, and the EV Driver Bill of Rights.
Hosted my annual Children’s Health Fair with Harbor-UCLA Medical Center cosponsored by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas! Hosted our Second Annual Pet Adoption Fair at Wilson Park in Torrance! Dogs and a bunny from the Carson Animal Care Center were adopted into loving homes! Thanks to the ASPCA and Friends of Torrance Animals for co-hosting!
Introduced House Resolution 116 to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the signing of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988. Signed by President Ronald Reagan, the Act provided an official apology and a measure of redress for the unjust incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. Former internees Kanji Sahara of Torrance and Nancy Oda were among special guests in the Capitol for this event.
I had the distinct honor to speak at the National Conference of State Legislatures on California's aerospace innovation in Los Angeles. I spoke about Assembly Bill 427, my Aerospace Commission bill which will establish a private-public partnership to advocate for California's aerospace industry and jobs. I was joined by Alabama Senator Bill Holtzclaw, Utah Senator Howard Stephenson, Virginia Senator John Cosgrove, and Texas Representative Dennis Paul.
I hosted a Senior Scam Stopper Seminar at Torrance Memorial Medical Center on August 2nd. My staff were present to introduce the panelists and answer questions for those in attendance. We heard from Jane Kreidler of the Contractors State License Board, Marc Narlesky of the Franchise Tax Board, Jackie Wiley of the Department of Business Oversight, and Glenn Morimoto of the United State Postal Inspection. Mary Malone of SCAN Health Plan and Ges Davis plus volunteers of South Bay Village were also on hand to provide useful information to seniors. Thank you to all who participated and to Torrance Memorial for allowing us to use their auditorium.
Today, I met Redondo Beach education leaders in my South Bay office. We talked about the importance of school funding, including passage of my school funding bill AB 2808, as well as RBUSD's great use of solar energy to save the school district money. Thanks to Superintendent Steven Keller, Redondo Beach Education Foundation Executive Director Raymur Flinn and Board President Hanh Archer for a great meeting!
I visited the Downey Animal Care Center today to learn more about how my bill, AB 2791, will help save Los Angeles County's kittens and puppies. The bill, which will allow rescue groups to immediately adopt, rather than wait three days as is currently required, unweaned kittens and puppies from the Shelter. This will prevent these at-risk animals from becoming sick at the shelter in their first weeks of life. This will also help to reduce overcrowding in these shelters.
I also learned about the ASPCA Community Engagement Team and the services they provide to current and future pet owners, as well as their programs for vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and animal socialization.
Thank you to Allison Cardona, Deputy Director of Los Angeles County’s Department of Animal Care and Control, Shannon Asquith, Downey Animal Care Center Manager, and Devon Frazier, ASPCA’s Director of Community Engagement in LA for the tour. Thank you to Susan Riggs, ASPCA Senior Director of State Legislation – Western Region for setting up the tour.
