Happy to welcome Los Angeles Air Force Base Commander Colonel Ann Igl to Assembly District 66 at the South Bay Aerospace Alliance Meeting this morning. I gave an update about AB 427, my Aerospace Commission bill which is currently on the Governor’s Desk. Thank you to the Alliance for all their hard work and advocacy for the aerospace industry and LAAFB.
We will never forget what happened on September 11, 2001. Thank you Manhattan Beach for this wonderful ceremony this morning to remember our loved ones, first responders and all who were affected by this moment in history. Our spirit was tested, but never broken.
My first Community Coffee of the month took place at Torrance Municipal Airport’s Zamperini Field Community Room on September 8th. It was a packed house and we had great conversations about fracking, traffic, the Metro Green Line extension, housing, and other community concerns. I always enjoy engaging constituents at these coffees and was encouraged by everyone’s desire to participate in the issues that affect their daily lives.
I delivered $10 million in state funding for a South Bay Public Safety Training Center this year. This funding will help provide the South Bay with a much needed public safety training center for our firefighters, law enforcement, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians. Thank you El Camino College President Dr. Dena Maloney, Torrance Fire Chief Martin Serna and the Public Safety Training Center Advisory Council for the recognition.
Kicked off National Drive Electric Week on September 6 with Plug In America! I spoke in support of the EV movement, my Assembly Bill 1796, which will help install more electric vehicle charging stations on rental properties, and the EV Driver Bill of Rights.
Hosted my annual Children’s Health Fair with Harbor-UCLA Medical Center cosponsored by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas! Together we provided free dental, pediatric, and eye exams, school supplies, and giveaways and information from partners including LA Galaxy, South Bay LGBT Center, LA County Libraries, and many more.
Hosted our Second Annual Pet Adoption Fair at Wilson Park in Torrance! Dogs and a bunny from the Carson Animal Care Center were adopted into loving homes! Thanks to the ASPCA and Friends of Torrance Animals for co-hosting!
Introduced House Resolution 116 to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the signing of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988. Signed by President Ronald Reagan, the Act provided an official apology and a measure of redress for the unjust incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. Former internees Kanji Sahara of Torrance and Nancy Oda were among special guests in the Capitol for this event.
