As Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Aerospace, I toured the Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo with my colleague Assemblymember Mike Fong from the San Gabriel Valley. LA Air Force Base is headquarters to the newly created US Space Force's Space Systems Command. They procure billions of dollars of space and cybersecurity technology so they are a powerful economic force in the Southern California aerospace industry.
Great South Bay Pet Adoption Fair today at Torrance’s Wilson Park! Thank you to the many families who adopted a new family member today! Thanks to sponsors Carson Animal Shelter and ASPCA.
Yesterday was a beautiful day at Bruce's Beach in Manhattan Beach!
The beachfront property that was wrongfully taken from Black owners Willa and Charles Bruce more than a hundred years ago was returned today to the Bruce family.
I am proud to be a leader on the future of Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs). My bill, AB 2432, would allow any city in County of Los Angeles to create their own NEV transportation networks including signage, dedicated lanes, and street markings. These small, zero-emission vehicles are a great option to reduce congestion and increase parking capacity for many of the routine trips that people take around town.
Today, I toured the City of El Segundo with Mayor Drew Boyles and members of the South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG), who showed me how the City plans to incorporate NEVs into their road network. I want to thank Mayor Boyles, Mayor Pro Tem Chris Pimentel, SBCCOG Executive Jacki Bacharach, SBCCOG Chair John Cruikshank, and SBCCOG Senior Project managers David Leger and Aaron Baum for organizing this tour.
I look forward to getting AB 2432 signed into law this year so that cities across LA County can revitalize their local travel networks!
I toured Sling, a local business at the Torrance Airport. They manufacture and maintain small propeller planes in Torrance and train commercial pilots through their pilot license academy there.
I met co-owners Matt Liknaitzky and Jean d'Assonville who shared their great passion for flying. Matt also lives in Torrance and emphasized how Sling is working on noise mitigation and being good neighbors.
I also tried their new flight simulator. Good fun flying over the beautiful South Bay, but I don’t think I'll be flying any time soon! Thanks to Jim Gates, member of the Torrance Airport Association, for joining us.
Inspiring South Bay story of hope and perseverance. Neighborhood activists Del Amo Action Committee fought for years to convert a former EPA toxic Superfund site in unincorporated West Carson near Torrance Blvd and Normandie into a neighborhood park. Inspired by their effort, the LA Neighborhood Land Trust is developing the Wishing Tree Park, set for grand opening in September.
This neighborhood has been literally dumped on for decades by the Montrose Corporation, formerly the world's biggest DDT manufacturer which also dumped DDT into the ocean off the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
The Neighborhood Land Trust replaced the top two feet of soil throughout the park and sealed off the underground as part of the major environmental cleanup effort to make sure the park is safe for everyone. I secured $500,000 in state funding to help finance the project. The neighborhood hopes the Wishing Tree Park will become a safe community space for children to play and families to gather together for generations to come.
Check it out next time you're in the neighborhood!
South Bay #MarchForOurLives on The Strand from Manhattan Beach Pier to Hermosa Beach Pier to call for common sense gun safety laws. Enough is enough. American children are now more likely to die from gun violence than from auto accidents. I am a joint author of a bill to ban ghost guns and coauthor of a bill to allow victims to sue gun manufacturers for their blood money. Thank you to march organizer Lance Dominguez of Torrance and the hundreds of South Bay residents who stood up in solidarity with marches across the country to end gun violence.
Summer on the Hill begins with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce Street Fair & Music Festival! PV Chamber CEO and President Eileen Hupp and her team put on such a great South Bay family event.
Spoke at the Torrance Chamber's State of the State forum today. Focused on the economy, inflation, the state budget, funding for our schools, homelessness and crime. I've been fighting for a major increase to base grant funding for our K-12 schools. Final budget should be passed in the next few weeks.
