California to feds: Speed up loan forgiveness for Corinthian students

California’s top law enforcement officer is calling on the federal government to discharge the student loans of thousands of former students of Corinthian Colleges who have already been approved for loan forgiveness before they are forced to start paying again.

…Meanwhile, lawmakers at the state level have been taking steps to address student debt. A bill by Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi, D-Torrance, that would prevent forgiven student loan debt from being assessed as a tax liability passed the Assembly on a 76-0 vote last week. “No one should be taxed for forgiven student loans,” Muratsuchi said in a statement.
