Hydrogen fuel cell system will help environment and families around the ports

Torrance, CA – Today, Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) spoke at a press conference announcing Toyota’s “Project Portal,” a hydrogen fuel cell system for heavy-duty trucks at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.  The hydrogen fuel cell system will be a part of a feasibility study examining the potential of fuel cell technology in trucks, and will support the Ports’ Clean Air Action Plan.

Muratsuchi says that a fuel cell system like this is the kind of green technology that will help keep the environment safe for South Bay families.

“These hydrogen fuel cell trucks have the power and torque to haul heavy duty cargo while emitting nothing but water.  While the ports have made significant progress in reducing air pollution, too many of our children in this community continue to suffer from asthma.  And our planet, if we believe in science, continues to suffer from climate change,” Muratsuchi said.  “We need this technology to succeed.  I look forward to supporting Toyota’s innovative leadership in zero emission trucks, and the ports’ ongoing fight to cleaner air.”

Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi represents California’s 66th Assembly District, which includes El Camino Village, Gardena, Harbor City, Harbor Gateway, Hermosa Beach, Lomita, Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, Torrance, and West Carson.  He serves as Chairman of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee and the Assembly Select Committee on Aerospace.  Muratsuchi is a member of the Assembly Committees on Appropriations, Natural Resources, Utilities and Energy, and Veterans Affairs.
